The Anniversary[1] is the thirteenth episode of the second season of American Housewife, and the thirty-sixth episode overall. Written by Bill Callahan and directed by David Bertram, it aired on January 17, 2018.
Plot[]
Katie doesn't want one of Greg's over-the-top romantic gestures for their 18th anniversary, but such a gesture is just what Oliver needs when he screws up his first date with Gina by taking advice from Spencer. Frustrated with not getting anything on the school's candy-gram day, Anna-Kat scares the other students into giving their candy-grams to her. Meanwhile, Greg and Katie are convinced that Taylor is dating new fling Trip just to get under their skin, and plot to break up the two.
The episode begins with Greg and Katie preparing for their 19th wedding anniversary. Oliver tells Anna-Kat to stay out of his room tells Katie to tell Anna-Kat to stay out of his room. After Oliver tells Katie to tell her to stay out of his(his what?), Katie grounds Anna-Kat (never happened). Then, Anna-Kat gets sad and goes upstairs to her room crying(also never happened???). Trip is seeing Taylor today and she is going to a movie theater. Principal Ablin calls Katie about Anna-Kat. Anna-Kat talked about Bloody Becky at school.(why is this sentence structure so bad???) That’s why Katie grounded her(you just said she got grounded for snooping around Oliver's room, so which is it?). Her and Greg go upstairs to Anna-Kat’s room, to talk to her about why did she still annoy Oliver. She was sad and started crying because she wanted candy grams.(AGAIN DID NOT HAPPEN) So Katie felt pretty sad for Anna-Kat, so did Greg. The next day, Anna-Kat wanted to stay home. The next day, Anna-Kat got four candy grams and she was happy, so was Katie and Greg.(Did an 11 year old write this synopsis?) The night of the anniversary, Taylor and Trip stay with the ottos(surnames get capitalised) because it’s Katie and Greg’s night. They’re making tacos. But after that, Katie and Greg are using reverse psychology because of Taylor.(need to explain more, it's not just because of Taylor...) So Taylor tells them rudely to get out of her life. So they left. The ottos(again surnames get capitalised)were doing something special for Katie and Greg and they did blowing lights. In the last scene, the ottos(for the 3rd time surnames are capitalised) are eating pizza because Oliver ordered a pizza from Gina’s pizza place.

Katie: I know you’re sorry but you have to apologize to Oliver. You lost a tally because of it. You need to know what you’re working for. And sometimes we can annoy people but Taylor or Oliver don’t annoy you. You are the one who’s annoying them. You. I know you want your tally back but you will get it some day. But listen, I know you want it back, but you gotta earn the tally back. Now you can’t annoy people because you need to stay out of Oliver’s room. When anyone tells you to do something you have to do it immediately. Understood?
Anna-Kat: (still crying) I understand. But I didn’t get any candy grams at school. Now everyone but me is gonna get one. (Continues crying)

Carly: (laughing hysterically) never looked? Holy hell. (Continues laughing hysterically)

Kristina: it’s a Katie and Greg mug just for you guys. Also I have a special surprise for you two.
Anna-Kat: (comes downstairs) (to Katie and Greg) happy anniversary. (Clapping for them)
(Katie and Greg take a bow while Anna-Kat claps for them)
Katie: Thank You.
Greg: we appreciate it.
Taylor: (opens and closes the door) hey guys we decided we want to be here for your anniversary dinner tonight.
Greg: oh no. I’m sure you two have better things to do.
Taylor: oh we do but we’re gonna put them on hold because we’re all enjoying each other’s company so much. (To Trip) their making tacos.
Trip: TACOS!
Greg: I don’t know that this anniversary couldn’t get more special.
Trip: (crunches away) Killer good Mr A.
Greg: I’m glad you like them Trip. I’ll get you some more. Katie help.
Katie: great. They’re so gonna be sad.
Greg: yeah it’s gonna be the worst because I think they should break up now. (Him and Katie laugh)
Taylor: ugh. Why are they talking about me and Trip? It’s freaking me out.
Anna-Kat: they’re probably using reverse psychology to make you less into him.
Taylor: really?
Anna-Kat: yeah. It’s like....well think about it. If I annoy you, it’s not ok. Right?
Taylor: yeah.
Anna-Kat: ok. So you’re 16 and I’m 8. And I understand you hate it but you’re just going to have to learn to like it.
Taylor: great. This is so unfair.
Anna-Kat: I know it’s unfair but don’t worry. Maybe you need a time with a little bit more time with him than Mom and Dad. For example: I’m more annoying then Oliver. Right?
Taylor: yeah.
Anna-Kat: well then it’s a McDreamy.
Taylor: what the hell does that mean?

Taylor: I know what you two are up to. You’re just trying to use reverse psychology.
Katie: Taylor that’s because you’re dating him to annoy us.
Taylor: has it I occur to you that I might be dating him because I actually like him and it has nothing to do with you?
Katie: (chuckles) you know I don’t function that way.
Taylor: from now on, I’d appreciate it if you both stop butting into my life.
Katie: (knocks on the bathroom door) are you in there?
Anna-Kat: come back later I need some privacy.
Katie: privacy? Normally she wants me to hold her hand while she poops.
Greg: we’re going in. (Both go in the bathroom) what do you think you’re doing?
Anna-Kat: getting rid of the evidence like the guy in Fargo who stole the wood chopper.
Greg: (to Katie) you let her watch Fargo?
Katie: you were supposed to close your eyes for that.
Greg: Anna-Kat we are so disappointed in you. You promised us you wouldn’t do it again and you lied to us. As punishment, no electronics and no more secret movie time with mama.
Katie: yeah. Your father’s right.
Anna-Kat: (gasps sadly and starts crying) now I’ll never get my electronics back. (Continues crying) I love them so much.
Katie: I know you do honey but you didn’t listen. So you’re not getting them back for the rest of the week.
Anna-Kat: but it’s not fair. (Continues crying)
Katie: I know it’s not fair. Come in your room. (Both go in Anna-Kat’s room) maybe you’re a little off today.
Anna-Kat: mm-hmm. (Continues crying)
Katie: come here. (Both hug and rub each other’s backs during it while Anna-Kat is still crying) I think you owe me an apology.

Anna-Kat: (rudely) well I’m sorry. Was I yelling at you with my pinky up and my whole mouth open for a damn secret?
Ms Meltzer: Anna-Kat, we do not use that kind of language in school.
Anna-Kat: UGH (walks away angrily)
Ms Meltzer: you need to get back in the classroom.
Anna-Kat: (rudely) but I’m walking.
Ms Meltzer: well walk and come back.
Anna-Kat: (rudely) fine. (Walks back to the classroom angrily)

Anna-Kat: (looks at Penny sadly and wiped away her tears from her eyes)
Penny: look. (Rubs Anna-Kat’s back while Anna-Kat is still crying) you’re being rude and disrespectful to her and very aggressive. Maybe it’s the best way to apologize to her for being rude to her. I think that’s selfish.
Anna-Kat: great. Now everyone thinks I’m selfish, rude, disrespectful and aggressive. I hate my life. (Continues crying and sniffles)

Anna-Kat: (sits up, takes her hood off, gets her hair out of her face and sees Ms Meltzer while she is still crying)

Anna-Kat: mm-hmm. (Sniffles)

Anna-Kat: I was doing my work and then all of a sudden I started talking back to Ms Meltzer. (Continues crying and sniffles)

Dr Ellie: come on. (Her and Anna-Kat go to Ms Meltzer’s room) (to Ms Meltzer) so I told Anna-Kat that if she doesn’t like anything, she can take a deep breath and move on.
Ms Meltzer: that’s a good idea. So Anna-Kat just like Dr Ellie said, we just take deep breaths.
Dr Ellie: and we just let it go. OK?
Anna-Kat: OK. (Sniffles)
Dr Ellie: aw (touches Anna-Kat’s back and rubs it) I know you can do this. Just try.
Anna-Kat: OK. I’ll try.
Penny: Anna-Kat listen, (rubs Anna-Kat’s back) when I went here in the first day of school, I broke down in tears because my mom missed me so I missed her and she broke down in tears too. And I miss her now. It’s hard for me and you because we always miss our moms. Right?
Anna-Kat: yeah. (Sniffles)
Penny: and we’ll see them at the end of the day. OK?
Anna-Kat: ok. (Sniffles)
Penny: listen, I understand it’s hard but it’s ok that it’s hard. But don’t worry. I’ll always be here. I’m your best friend and you are mine no matter what. I will always be here for you.
Anna-Kat: ok.
Ms Meltzer: so what are we going to do?
Anna-Kat: I think we should try it and not be aggressive.
Dr Ellie: ok. You can try. Just give it a shot. Do you know what that means?
Anna-Kat: no.
Dr Ellie: it means we give it a try.
Ms Meltzer: just like what Dr Ellie said we give it a shot.
Anna-Kat: ok.
Penny: and no matter what, it’s ok. Now I need you to apologize to Ms Meltzer.

Anna-Kat: yes I understand. (Continues crying)
Ms Meltzer: I know you understand and I know you want your stars back, but you can’t be rude to me. It’s disrespectful. I think I have to tell your mom about this.
Anna-Kat: no please don’t tell mama. (Continues crying)
Ms Meltzer: sorry. I have to. You need to think about what you’re saying to people. This behavior is unacceptable and it’s not ok. And I understand you want them but don’t worry. I understand. It’s ok. (Looks at Katie and talks to her) Mrs Otto, can you come here for a quick second please?
Katie: sure I’m coming. What’s the news?
Ms Meltzer: well during class almost all day, Anna-Kat was being very disrespectful to me and I didn’t like it.
Katie: oh that’s not nice. Anna-Kat, you were very rude to Ms Meltzer. That’s not ok. You’re gonna be losing a tally off the reward systems list if you keep disrespecting any adult.
Anna-Kat: (sniffles) but mama
Katie: seriously. It’s disrespectful. No one doesn’t appreciate it. Ms Meltzer doesn’t appreciate it and I don’t appreciate it too. It’s not ok. I want you to be happy.
Anna-Kat: but mama I’m sorry.
Katie: I know your sorry. But do you know that you need to owe an apology to? Ms Meltzer.
Anna-Kat: (sniffles) but I was like this because I didn’t get any stars in class and now everyone else has them. It’s not fair. (Continues crying)
Katie: I know it’s not fair. Come here. (Both hug and Ms Meltzer joins in and her and Katie rub Anna-Kat’s back during the hug while Anna-Kat is still crying)
Anna-Kat: uh-huh. (Sniffles)
Ms Meltzer: and sometimes if we ever get mad over something and we start crying over it we take a deep breath and we move on. OK?
Anna-Kat: OK. (Sniffles) but I don’t know what am I supposed to do. (Sniffles) now everything’s my fault. (Continues crying)
Ms Meltzer: hey, everything isn’t your fault. Some of it is but not all of it is your fault.
Anna-Kat: great. Now I’m never gonna stop being mean again. I hate my life. (Continues crying)
Katie: aw sweetheart, (hugs Anna-Kat and rubs her back during it while Anna-Kat is still crying)
Ms Meltzer: you don’t hate your life, you just have to do it. That’s all.
Katie: and like what Ms Meltzer said, you have to do it. There’s nothing to be teary eyed about. Well there is but your working for a stuffed animal. So there is so sometimes we are a little out of control and very nervous. Right?
Anna-Kat: yeah. (Sniffles and continues crying)
Katie: maybe being respectful to Ms Meltzer should be a part of the reward systems list? Right?
Anna-Kat: yeah.
Katie: so just do what Ms Meltzer says. OK?

Katie: well sweetheart you have to be nice to Ms Meltzer. She likes you and you like her too. Right?

Ms Meltzer: I’ll teach you. so let’s get one thing clear here. You’ve been told by me. If I tell you to do something, then you must respect me and listen. Because if you don’t, then there’s gonna be consequences. What do you need to do?

(Sighs) listen, I know that you’re upset over it I know. But sometimes when you are doing the wrong things, I erase a tally off your reward systems list. So we have to think before we respond from now on. OK?

Ms Meltzer: and starting tomorrow, we are gonna just do it. OK?
Anna-Kat: OK.
Katie: so what Ms Meltzer said that we take a deep breath. And in that, we can earn our tallies back for our reward systems list. OK?
Anna-Kat: OK I’ll try.
Ms Meltzer: just try. I know you can do it you wanna know why? Because I’ve known you for almost 5 months now. You are a very nice student of mine and I love what you do. So starting tomorrow, we’re gonna do something together. If we are upset and start crying over something, we’re not gonna yell, we’re not gonna scream, we’re not gonna be rude, we’re gonna take a deep breath. OK?
Anna-Kat: OK.
Katie: OK.
Carly: what the hell are we talking about here?
Ms Meltzer: oh just some stuff Carly.
Carly: cool. (To Katie) Can you start driving? Taylor and Oliver are ready.
Katie: sure.
Anna-Kat: I’ll see you tomorrow Ms Meltzer.
Ms Meltzer: I’ll see you tomorrow Anna-Kat. (To Katie) just as so you know she went to Dr Ellie and she and I helped Anna-Kat with it.
Katie: thank you. She told me. But again, thank you.
Ms Meltzer: your welcome.
(the next day)
Anna-Kat: (working for a couple minutes) (sighs) I can’t believe it.
Ms Meltzer: Anna-Kat, shhh. People are still working.
Anna-Kat: (gets sad because of Ms Meltzer who told her to be quiet)
Ms Meltzer: Anna-Kat listen, you just have to be quiet. Life isn’t all about you.
Anna-Kat: (gets more sad)
Penny: well Anna-Kat Ms Meltzer isn’t wrong. You have to be quiet just like I am.
Anna-Kat: ugh. (Gets sad more and starts crying)
Penny: aw my best friend it’s ok. (Rubs Anna-Kat’s back while Anna-Kat is still crying)
(when 10 minutes was over)
Anna-Kat: (crying)
Ms Meltzer: (goes to Anna-Kat’s desk next talks to her) Anna-Kat, what’s wrong?
Anna-Kat: I just want my stars back. (Continues crying)
Ms Meltzer: I know you want your stars back I know. (Rubs Anna-Kat’s back) but we have to work for them. Right?
Anna-Kat: mm-hmm. (Sniffles and continues crying)
Ms Meltzer: (sighs) listen, do you have a stuffed animal with you?
Anna-Kat: mm-hmm. It’s a stuffed bird. It always cheers me up and always hugs me when I cry.
Ms Meltzer: that’s cool. I know your a little upset over things and I know about that. But you have one so if every time your stressed because you want your stars, you can hug it. OK?
Anna-Kat: OK. (Pulls her hood up and gets sad and shy while crying)
Ms Meltzer: you gotta take your hood off.
Anna-Kat: but I’m shy. (Sniffles)
Ms Meltzer: what are you shy about?
Anna-Kat: I’m just shy because I am. (Continues crying)
Penny: (sighs and rubs Anna-Kat’s back)
Anna-Kat: (touches Penny’s back while Penny rubs Anna-Kat’s back)
Ms Meltzer: (sighs and rubs Anna-Kat’s back) listen, everyone gets shy sometimes. And it’s ok. I understand. It’s very safe for you to keep it off. But sometimes we get shy so your always doing that to make you cheer you up. Right?
Anna-Kat: mm-hmm. (Sniffles)
Ms Meltzer: it’s ok. Remember yesterday when I told you at the end of the day to take a deep breath?
Anna-Kat: (still sad) mm-hmm. (Sniffles)
Ms Meltzer: just take a deep breath ok? Do it with me. 1,2,3 smell the flowers
Anna-Kat: (inhales)
Ms Meltzer: and blow out the birthday candles.
Anna-Kat: (exhales)
Ms Meltzer: good job. Feel better now?
Anna-Kat: mm-hmm.
Ms Meltzer: good.
(before the end of the day)
Ms Meltzer: guess what Anna-Kat? you got stars.
Anna-Kat: (gasps and claps her hands)
Ms Meltzer: yep. (Gets 5 stars for Anna-Kat on Anna-Kat’s star list)
(school the next day during passing time)
Anna-Kat: I’m gonna go in the hall for a couple minutes. (Goes in the hall and sees her friends) hey Autumn.
Autumn: hey Anna-Kat. (Walks by and away)
(both Anna-Kat and Penny) everybody clap your hands. (Both clapping their hands)
Penny: (sighs) I’m gonna go back in the classroom. (Goes back in the classroom)
Anna-Kat: (gasps because she sees Taylor)
Taylor: (sighs) damn it.
Kristina: you alright Taylor?
Taylor: a little but I don’t know what to do with this problem.
Kristina: (sees a couple boys with their hoods on and gets angry at them) hey, you boys over there.
(boys look at Kristina)
Kristina: Take your hoods off.
(the boys take their hoods off and walk away)
Kristina: And leave them off.
Anna-Kat: hi Taylor. (Waves flirty to her and giggles during it)
Taylor: (looks at Anna-Kat waving at her flirty, sighs angrily and walks away angrily because of Anna-Kat)
Anna-Kat: (sighs) I love to annoy Taylor.
Penny: hey Anna-Kat wanna do a TikTok with me?
Anna-Kat: sure. Let’s have our belly buttons out.
Penny: (gasps happily) excellent idea! (Both have their belly buttons out)
(Anna-Kat and Penny do a TikTok from Penny’s phone doing a rap song they both like)
(Bell rings and she goes back in the classroom)
Ms Meltzer: ok class. Now we are going to do some science. So for this now you’re going to do some lab safety. Now, this science experiment is very important so we need to pay attention. Now we have our safety glasses. Right?
Anna-Kat: um Ms Meltzer I think I’m too scared to do this experiment.
Ms Meltzer: ok. So you don’t have to do it Anna-Kat.
Anna-Kat: ok. I’m scared. (Pulls her hood up, hides her hair in her face and gets sad and shy)
Penny: aw don’t be scared. (Rubs Anna-Kat’s back while Anna-Kat is still scared)
Anna-Kat: (touches Penny’s back while Penny rubs Anna-Kat’s back)
(during recess)
Anna-Kat: hey Penny, you wanna go on the swing with me?
Penny: yeah. (Goes on the swing with Anna-Kat)
Both: weeeee. (Both giggle)
Anna-Kat: (sighs) my favorite BFF.
Penny: (sighs) my favorite BFF too.
(both giggle and hug while giggling)

Anna-Kat: did you know that you were still going to church?
Penny: yeah. (Both giggle)
Ms Meltzer: so Anna-Kat, Penny, you guys will be working together.
(Both gasp, scream, hug and giggle)
